Southern Fruit Grower is rooted in two places: family farms in Cư M'gar, Đắk Lắk province, in Vietnam's Central Highlands, and gardens across Georgia and the US Southeast. Both are warm and humid in summer, and it's tempting to assume what grows in one will grow in the other. Some of it does. A lot of it doesn't. Here is an honest comparison.
Monthly averages for 2001–2020 from the ERA5 reanalysis (via the Open-Meteo historical weather API), for grid points near Buôn Ma Thuột, the capital of Đắk Lắk, and Atlanta. Reanalysis values are modeled estimates for a grid area, so local weather station records can differ, especially for rainfall.
| Buôn Ma Thuột area (Đắk Lắk) | Atlanta area (Georgia) | |
|---|---|---|
| Latitude | about 12.7° N | about 33.7° N |
| Elevation (grid) | about 490 m (1,600 ft) | about 320 m (1,050 ft) |
| Coldest month, avg high / low | Dec: 79°F / 66°F | Jan: 51°F / 34°F |
| Warmest month, avg high / low | Apr: 92°F / 72°F | Jul–Aug: 87°F / 71°F |
| Lowest daily low in 20 years | about 54°F | about 8°F |
| Nights at or below freezing per year | 0 | about 39 |
| Rainfall pattern | Very dry Dec–Mar (under 1 in/month), wet May–Oct (5–9 in/month) | Spread through the year, roughly 3–5 in every month |
Summer feels alike. July and August nights in Atlanta average about 70°F, very close to Đắk Lắk's wet-season nights, and both have hot, humid days. Disease pressure from heat and humidity (fungal leaf spots, fruit rot) is a shared problem.
Moderate elevation. Both areas sit on uplands a few hundred meters above sea level rather than on a hot coastal plain.
Red soils. The Central Highlands are known for red basaltic soils; Georgia's Piedmont is known for red clay. They are not the same soil, but both are often acidic and weathered, so a soil test comes first in both places.
Frost. This is the big one. The Đắk Lắk grid point never dropped below about 54°F in 20 years. Atlanta averages around 39 freezing nights a year and has gone down to single digits. Truly tropical crops such as durian and coffee cannot survive a Georgia winter outdoors.
Winter is dry season vs. cold season. In the Central Highlands the "off" season is a long dry spell that farmers manage with irrigation. In Georgia it's a cold season, and rain keeps falling.
Day length. At about 12.7° N, day length in Đắk Lắk changes little through the year. At about 33.7° N, Atlanta has long summer days and short winter days, which affects when some plants flower.
